Sossion throws weight behind controversial Finance Bill

Former KNUT Secretary General and Tourism Chief Administration Secretary Wilson Sossion has said that the 3 per cent housing levy should not be contested as the government is trying to provide shelter to all Kenyans.

Speaking during an interview at a local TV station on May 30, Sossion supported the controversial Finance Bill 2023 saying that it will aid civil servants in the future as majority of them retire into poverty and debt because of poor savings.

“The 3 percent levy is a contribution. Everyone will benefit from it. It is an additional saving for the worker. The teachers of tomorrow will not be borrowing loans to build houses. You get a house as you begin service. That is the future,” he explained.

President Ruto is pushing for passage of the Bill promising that it will create employment for the youth and provide affordable houses to people with low incomes who are not able to afford decent housing.

Sossion said the country should instead draw its focus on how the housing plan will be implemented.

“From my point of view as a labour leader for many years, housing plans should not be debated. The main issue should be on how it will be implemented,” the CAS said.

At the same time, he said that it is due time the government introduce new education reforms to bring equality countrywide by ensuring that every community has their own school next door.

He argued that the move will stop the stigmatization of schools in funding as there has more focus on national schools whereas extra-county, county schools and sub-county schools are neglected when it comes to funding by the government.
