Former Nominated MP and ex-KNUT Secretary General Wilson Sossion has praised the National Government Constituency Development Fund (NG-CDF) for its impact on Kenya’s education sector, describing it as the most effective funding model since independence.

Speaking during an interview with one of the local media stations on Monday, August 24, 2025, Sossion said NG-CDF has significantly reduced reliance on community fundraisers for school infrastructure, noting that the days of Harambee for classroom construction are largely behind the country.

“In just over a decade, NG-CDF has achieved what other funds couldn’t. We no longer see Harambee for school buildings, and the results are visible across the country,” he said.

Sossion credited the fund with promoting equity in education, saying it has enabled schools in all constituencies to access resources for infrastructure and bursaries. He warned against efforts to undermine or politicise the fund, arguing that its benefits far outweigh any perceived shortcomings.

“We shouldn’t be fighting over how resources are shared just to elevate certain offices or interests. NG-CDF has done more for education than any other fund by ensuring every constituency gets a fair share,” he stated.

The fund, introduced in 2003 under the then President Mwai Kibaki, has since become a key tool for Members of Parliament to support local development, particularly in education. It has been used to build classrooms, provide bursaries, and support other community-based initiatives.

While NG-CDF has faced legal and constitutional scrutiny over the years, Sossion maintained that its role in advancing education should not be overlooked. He urged the government to protect and strengthen the fund rather than challenge its existence.
