Sonkoi wins KNUT Kajiado Chair in closely contested union elections

Teachers in Kajiado County have elected officials to lead the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Kajiado branch following elections held on March 7, which saw several positions hotly contested while others were filled unopposed.

John Sonkoi was elected the new branch Chairperson after defeating Raphael Sairiamu in a closely fought race. Sonkoi garnered 833 votes, edging out Sairiamu who received 779 votes.

The position of Vice Chairperson went to Jane Tanchu, who was elected unopposed, automatically securing the seat without a contest.

In the race for Executive Secretary, Elly Korinko emerged victorious with 866 votes, defeating Stanley Nairi, who garnered 696 votes and Nimo Mohamed, who received 66 votes.

The Assistant Executive Secretary position also attracted competition, with Johnstone Keton winning after securing 852 votes against Daniel Lantei, who received 778 votes.

For the Treasurer position, Edward Pulei was elected unopposed, while Melody Paitah won the Assistant Treasurer seat after receiving 854 votes, beating Edwin Kakuro, who got 776 votes.

In the Woman Representative race, Priscila Pilale secured the seat with 916 votes, defeating Abigael Kuya, who received 712 votes.

Meanwhile, in the Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Representative contest, Morgan Parsalal won with 930 votes, beating Jane Mwatha, who garnered 698 votes.

Branch Executive Committee representatives

The elections also determined representatives to the Branch Executive Committee (BEC) ,the governing body within a KNUT branch that helps oversee union operations and represents teachers from different sub-branches.

In Kimana, Parsanka Raphael won with 106 votes, defeating Winfred Moson, who received 90 votes.

In Loitokitok, Daniel Kimotho emerged victorious with 77 votes, edging out Jacob Olongida, who got 69 votes.

Peter Meitamei won the Kajiado Central BEC seat with 119 votes, beating Dickson Oitoi, who received 76 votes.

In Kisamis, David Tiapapusha secured the seat with 77 votes, defeating Kapuya Mosiro (52 votes), Alex Nkoyo (22 votes) and Jacob Parsumari (5 votes).

For Mashuru, Justus Parkitenya was elected after garnering 90 votes, ahead of Gideon Letuyie (51 votes) and Felix Moshira (42 votes).

Several BEC representatives were elected unopposed, including Jonathan Kotemu (Isinya), Anthony Bundi (Namanga), Sidney Lasiti (Sultan), Joshat Njuki (Kajiado North), Iddi Leyian (Magadi), Joel Sikie (Ewuaso) and Kumokmali Matindi (Elangata Ewuaso).

In Ilbisil, David Magilu won the BEC position with 120 votes, defeating Titus Melubo, who garnered 83 votes.

The newly elected officials are expected to lead the branch in advocating for teachers’ welfare, representing members in negotiations with the government, and coordinating union activities across Kajiado County.
