Emining Boys High School in Mogotio, Baringo County erupted in song and dance on September 15 as students, teachers, staff, and the local community held a thanksgiving ceremony for Jepkosgey Chemoiwa, the mathematics and physics teacher who won the 2025 African Union Continental Best Teacher Award.
Chemoiwa, a 15-year teaching veteran, was welcomed in a grand procession as jubilant students sang and danced around her celebratory car.
Addressing the gathering, Chemoiwa expressed gratitude to God, the Teachers Service Commission (TSC), her colleagues, students, and family for their support throughout her journey. She recalled receiving the unexpected nomination call while teaching in class, initially mistaking it for a scam. “I want to thank TSC for seeing it fit to nominate me. This journey was not mine alone. My colleagues, my family, and my students all played a big role,” she said.
She also reflected on her humble beginnings, noting that she was born in Emining and attended Emining Primary School. “This is a clear indication that even if you start small, you can go far,” she encouraged.

Chemoiwa particularly appreciated the mathematics department for stepping in when she was away training other teachers and credited her students’ success in co-curricular activities for contributing to her recognition. “Work hard and be diligent in all you do. Success will follow,” she advised learners.
School principal Moses Sang praised Chemoiwa’s dedication, noting that her win was a victory for the entire school. “This is what we do when one of us succeeds. We will celebrate even more when she receives the award officially in Addis Ababa,” he said, adding humorously that students even skipped lunch to join the celebrations.
Colleague and close friend Violet Mondan described Chemoiwa as selfless, resilient, and results-oriented. “She never gives up, she inspires us, and this win is a motivation for the entire community,” she said.
Religious leaders and community members also joined the celebration, with a local reverend calling the award a blessing to Baringo County and beyond.
