Ranyala Primary and Junior School in Rarieda Sub-county, Siaya County, continues to attract national attention after emerging second nationally in the 2024 Wavumbuzi Entrepreneurship Challenge.

The school, situated in Ndigwa Zone near Luanda Kotieno Beach, joined the programme last year after the Head of Institution Julius Apopa discovered it through the Siaya County Education Wall. He involved ICT teacher Madam Sophy Anne Ouma, who trained at Siaya Township Secondary School before enrolling 117 Junior School learners in the challenge.

Learners participated in the competition using 26 tablets, tackling entrepreneurship challenges and submitting digital solutions.

“The use of tablets made learning more engaging and sparked interest among the students,” said Apopa.

The school received a certificate, laptop, and trophies for its performance, while participating learners were awarded individual certificates.

According to Madam Ouma, the Wavumbuzi programme has equipped students with practical skills and an entrepreneurial mindset.

“It helps learners become global thinkers who can address youth unemployment by creating opportunities, hence driving economic growth,” she said.

Guidance and Counselling head Madam Lilian Adhiambo Rapemo credited the programme, alongside strong support from teachers, the Catholic Church, and parents, for reducing truancy and early pregnancies among girls while keeping boys engaged in meaningful learning.

Teachers say the initiative has shifted learners’ attitudes from being job seekers to job creators, improved parental involvement, and enhanced academic focus.

The school’s performance has also been on an upward trend since 2023, with former pupils like Mitchell Achieng (now at Asumbi Girls after scoring 408 marks in KCPE) and John Onyango (Kabianga High School, 398 marks), both of whom are excelling in their studies.
