Siaya MCAs set aside Ksh740M for improvement of education

Oliver Arika, Siaya County Assembly Chair of the Education Committee.

The County Assembly of Siaya has set aside over 740 million shillings for the improvement of education, youth affairs, gender and social services.

The County Fiscal Strategy Paper 2023/2024 proposed projects and activities in the education docket to aid in ensuring effective services and infrastructural development of the sector across the entire region.

The County Assembly Committee Chair on Education, Youth Affairs, Gender and Social Services Oliver Arika noted that the fiscal strategy paper sets out broad development priorities and policy interventions to guide the county government in budgeting for its activities in the medium and long term.

In the document, a total of Ksh152,533,965 has been reserved for the remuneration of education, youth affairs, gender and social services staff for effective service delivery. Bursaries were allocated Ksh120 million while provision of other operational tools and equipment was allocated Ksh210,266,201.

Arika, who is the MCA for North Sakwa Ward in Bondo Constituency, said that for bursaries to Wards, he had proposed that the allocation be pushed to Ksh8 million beginning the next financial year from the current Ksh6.5 million allocation.

“The ECDE centres across our 30 Wards will benefit from 10 million shillings that will aid in equipping them with digital equipment. We have also factored the construction of 2 model ECDE centres both in Siaya and Bondo municipalities at 20 million shillings,” stated Arika.

The Paper, according to the chairman, has also allocated Ksh110,044,517 for the establishment of pre-primary school feeding programme. The completion of ongoing ECDE centres will benefit from Ksh30 million while Ksh5 million will be used to construct a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) rescue facility.

“For the renovation of polytechnics and Vocational Training Centres (VTCs), we have allocated 7 million shillings for infrastructure development and equipping of the workshops. We do this because we believe in imparting skills to our youth who will play a crucial role in the development of our county,” he added.
