The success of the new Competency Based Curriculum (CBC) will only succeed if all stakeholders showed support rather than criticizing it.

Speaking during the closure  of the one week training of secondary school teachers on the unpacking of the curriculum, Kenyenya Sub-county Director of Education, Mr. George Ouko termed the curriculum an all-rounded programme.

He told trainees to be good ambassadors of the curriculum at their institutions by transferring knowledge to their colleagues.

“You are now the ship captains and pilots who can navigate the sea  and conquer the space of the CBC in your schools in our absence because we have equipped you with sufficient knowledge and skills,” he said.

One of the participants a senior teacher from Kenyenya Secondary School, Mr. Walter Ontweka, testified that the  training was a big eye opener to the teachers beside it demystifying  the riddle of handling the junior pupils who will pioneer the entry to secondary schools across the country.

He said that among the new skills that were unveiled by the trainers  included the curriculum design that will replace schemes of  work in the old curriculum, research, tools of assessment of learners and lesson presentation centered on the learner.

Other skills that were acquired during the course include on how to handle children with special needs in an inclusive teaching approach.

Kenyenya Teachers’ Training College hosted and provided most of the facilitators for the training.

In her appreciation remarks, the principal of the college, Mrs. Tabitha Mwaniki, thanked the Ministry of Education for entrusting them  with the  responsibility of hosting the training.

She assured the public that the institution is growing rapidly because it has all the modern training facilities.

“We beacon all those who are thirsty for quality pedagogical skills to come and share with us,” she remarked.

Speaking at a different forum, Kisii County Director of Education, Mr. Pius Ngoma, said that  the  course that targeted more than 1000 teacher from the county  was spread in selected centers within the county.

He informed that teachers from Kisii Central Marani and South Gucha sub counties, attended the training at Kisii National School  while those from Nyamache and Sameta met at Sameta High School.

St. Angela Sengera Girls’ School provided the venue for teacher trainees  from Gucha Sub county.

Another lot of teachers assembled at Nyangweta SDA Mixed Secondary School where the closing ceremony was graced by Etago Sub county Deputy County  Commissioner, Mr. Jackson Njinda.

Mr. Ngoma called the exercise a success although it faced a few huddles on teachers who complained about the delayed reimbursement of the bus fare.

“There were afew problems on payment logistics but they were streamlined as teachers understood our planning logistics later,” he said.

The county education boss thanked the participants for the passion they exhibited during the course and asked them to internalize the concepts to enable them unpack the curriculum successfully.
