Shock in Kericho’s Samutet village as man kills 3 family members before being lynched by mob

A sombre mood has engulfed the village of Samutet in Kericho County after a middle-aged man fatally attacked his mother, sister-in-law, and a young child.

The suspect, who has not yet been officially identified, is said to have been struggling with drug addiction and had previously undergone rehabilitation.

However, his release from the facility occurred under unclear circumstances, raising questions about the effectiveness and monitoring of such interventions.

“He had become a menace to the community,” said one resident, who requested anonymity for fear of reprisals. “He was often involved in theft, fights, and drunken behaviour. We had raised concerns before, but nothing was done.”

The horrific attack took place on Wednesday afternoon, sparking panic and fury among locals.

After the attack, villagers rushed to the scene and lynched the suspect in what police are treating as a case of mob justice.

Kericho County Police Commander James Ngetich confirmed the incident.

“We are investigating the matter in full, including the circumstances that led to the suspect’s release from rehab and the subsequent mob action,” said Ngetich. “While we understand the community’s anger, taking the law into their own hands is not the solution.”

The four bodies have been moved to the Kericho County Referral Hospital Mortuary. Police have also launched an investigation into the suspect’s background, amid reports that he has a long-standing history of criminal activity.

The killings have sparked outrage and renewed calls for government action to combat drug abuse and provide better mental health support in the region.

“We are tired of burying our loved ones because of drugs,” lamented Martha Chepng’eno, a relative of the deceased. “The government must close illegal bars, regulate access to hard drugs, and follow up on people released from rehab.”

Community elders and church leaders echoed the same sentiments, urging the county administration to prioritise drug control efforts and counselling programs to support struggling families.
