Shock at Rongo varsity as female student dies in suspected suicide

Migori Governor Ochillo Ayacko in Migori Town, expressing concern over the welfare of Rongo University students after a tragic incident.

Migori County Governor Ochillo Ayacko has expressed urgent concern over the welfare of Rongo University students, stating that he is unhappy about the sad incidents occurring at the university after short intervals.

The Governor, who was speaking in Migori town today, asked students to be caretakers of their own brothers, especially at this time when university dons are on strike nationwide.

“We are living in challenging times when all of us, especially our children learning in Universities, should take maximum care of their lives,” he said.

Ayacko was reacting after learning about the sudden death of a Rongo University female student who was found unconscious in her rental house on Friday night.

According to University sources, Violet Mokobi Nyabicha, 19 years old, allegedly committed suicide in her room for unknown reasons.

“She joined the University recently to pursue linguistics, and we knew her as a quiet and disciplined girl,” said her neighbour, who identified herself as Rose Akinyi.

The neighbour said that she discovered the deceased lying on the bed unconscious at around 9pm on Friday and raised an alarm to alert other neighbours at the Paradise Hotel, who came and rushed her to the University Clinic, where she was pronounced dead on Saturday morning.

After ascertaining that she was dead, the neighbours suspected suicide and came back to the room and searched for any evidence.

The neighbours reported that they found all the buckets in the room turned upside down, as if there had been a big struggle in the room.

“We looked at the table and found a suicide note saying that if she died, there was someone responsible for her death. “Please, please, please, he is the cause,” said part of the suicide note that Education News saw.

Efforts by this reporter to reach Rongo University Vice Chancellor Prof. Samuel Gudu were unsuccessful, as the calls went unanswered.
