Shock at Kisii School as student dies in accident during school holiday

At Iyabe village in Bonchari, Kisii School student Anthony Makori died in a tree-fall accident during the August holiday on Saturday, August 2, 2025

Students have been asked to take care of themselves during the August holiday to avoid deaths that have become common.

The 16-year-old Form 2 student in class 2Q died on August 2, 2025, after a tree fell on him while resting at his home. The tragedy struck barely a week after he arrived home for the Term 2 holidays.

He was rushed to the hospital by his parents, but he unfortunately died.

According to Kisii School Principal Fred Mogaka, the late Antony Makori, 20, who was a student at his school, died during this August holiday in an accident.

In a Facebook message to the Kisii School fraternity, Mogaka reported a sad update, stating that Kisii School had lost one of its own after falling from a tree. He described the deceased as an intelligent boy who excelled at teamwork among his colleagues. Mogaka sent his condolences to the family on behalf of the Kisii School staff and students.

Friends, family, and the school community have expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss, describing it as a difficult time for those who knew him. The school community and his friends described him as a kind-hearted, jovial person, and his death came too early.

“I can’t believe he is no more, we bid each other bye the other day as we left for holidays, a jovial person, so kind-hearted, may you rest in peace, my friend,” a fellow student said.

Bonchari MP Charles Onchoke said he learned with much sadness about the death of a Kisii School student who died in an accident caused by a falling tree.

“It is bitter to lose young people, especially the youth who are the hope of our future,” he said. Dr. Inchoke, who spoke to Education, sent messages of condolences to the family of Master Anthony Makori of Iyabe village in the Constituency.

Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Marita Oimeke, termed August a month of bad omen in the country and appealed to the public, especially motorists, to be more cautious on the roads to avoid further accidents.

He appealed to teachers and parents to train their children, especially those in primary schools, on the basic techniques of first aid for their safety.

Faith-based school principals told to slow down and protect learners’ mental health

His body was taken to Kisii Teaching and Referral Mortuary Hospital to await burial on August 12 this year at their home, Iyabe village, near Precious Hope Academy in Suneka Division of Bonchari Constituency.

His body will leave the Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH) morgue on Monday, August 11, ahead of the burial, which will happen on Tuesday, August 12 at his family’s Iyabe Suneka home. His death, a blow to the Kisii School community, is yet to be a reality in the minds of many.
