Shock as two school children commit suicide in Mwingi

By Lydia Ngoolo

A Form 4 student and a Class 7 pupil have committed suicide in different incidents in Mwingi, throwing the town into disbelief and mourning.

The 20 year-old Form Four student at Kyanika Secondary School hanged himself in his father’s farm in Kathonzweni village of Mwingi Central Sub-county.

The boy left a suicide note in his room persuading his parents, neighbours and government to take the dead body to school. He gave no clear reason for that, except that learning made no sense.

The deceased had previously been transferred from Mbondoni Secondary School. He had refused to go to school two weeks in the run up to the tragedy.

In A similar incident and within a span of four days, another school child committed suicide in the same area.

The 12 year-old Class 7 girl at Kwa Musya Primary School  committed suicide in her father’s farm in Kavauni village of Mwingi Central Sub-county.

The deceased had previously refused to go to school for no apparent reason, but the mother insisted she had to go.

The two bodies are preserved in  Mwingi level IV Hospital morgue awaiting postmortem before burial.

Mwingi Central OCPD Peter Mutuma called on parents to take a central role in the lives of their children by befriending them to understand them better.

“They will also be confident enough to freely express their feelings. There is also need for counselling of young people,” Mutuma said.
