Nyamira Police have arrested a 51-year old man in Bosiango village for allegedly defiling a PP2 pupil.

According to parents of the minor, the suspect accosted his victim when she was returning home from school on Friday.

“He seized her from the road and took her into a bush where he committed the heinous act before running away,” said the mother.

A good samaritan who heard the helpless cries of the minor collected her from the bush and informed her parents.

She was taken to Nyamira Teaching and Referral Hospital where rape was confirmed and was admitted for treatment.

The matter was reported to the police where Nyamira County Police Commander James identified the suspect as the minor’s neighbor George Basweti and arrested and detained him awaiting appearance in Court on Monday.

Nyamira County Chairman for National Authority Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) Charles Nyakoe attributed the vice to the wide use of illicit brew such as chang’aa and abuse of other drugs in the county.

The Chairman appealed to the government to pass a law condemning children defilers to death or life sentences in order to save the lives of innocent children.

The clergy blamed some police officers who arrested suspects but later freed them after being bribed.

“I blame some of our police officers who abet crimes through corruption as they accept little money from suspects,” he said.

Kisii and Nyamira Counties Psychiatrist Mrs Mary Njuguna lamented on the high cases of moral waywardness in area and attributed it to stress.

The Doctor appealed to other medics and social workers to intensify guidance and counselling services to affected people in order to return sanity in the society.
