Three people, including a woman and her 16-year-old daughter, were killed in a tragic road accident involving a bodaboda and a Nissan Matatu at Tarakwa area along the Bomet–Kaplong Highway.

According to the reports, the accident occurred when the matatu driver attempted to overtake the motorcycle but slowed down after noticing oncoming vehicles, subsequently hitting the bodaboda from behind.

Both the motorbike and the matatu were headed towards Kaplong at the time of the accident.

The woman and her teenage daughter were reportedly returning home after shopping and were only about 100 metres from their residence when the accident occurred.

Confirming the incident, County Disaster Management Officer Stanley Mutai said the woman died on the spot, while her daughter and the bodaboda operator succumbed to their injuries upon arrival at Kaplong Mission Hospital.

“It is unfortunate that we have lost three lives in this accident,” Mutai said. “The woman died instantly at the scene, while the other two were confirmed dead at Kaplong Mission Hospital.”

Mutai noted that preliminary reports indicate the Matatu driver was overtaking when the accident happened.

“Both the motorcycle and the Matatu were heading towards Kaplong, and the accident occurred during an overtaking attempt,” he explained.

He urged motorists and other road users to exercise caution and strictly adhere to traffic rules, warning that accidents along the highway are on the rise.

“The increasing number of accidents along this road is alarming,” Mutai said. “All road users must be careful and observe traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life.”

Meanwhile, local residents have expressed concern over the growing number of accidents in the area in recent months, calling on the relevant authorities to urgently intervene and implement measures to curb the trend.
