Shock as body of Kirinyaga University student found floating in Thiba River

The body of a student of Kirinyaga University, who drowned in the flooding of the Thiba River, was found on Friday, May 17, 2024 floating on water at Ngumbatha village in Mwea Sub-county.

Lawi Kiptoo, a third year Building Engineering student, is reported to have tossed himself into the river on Wednesday, May 17 with hope of swimming the river to cross to the other end unfortunately he was overwhelmed by strong water currents and drowned.

Ngumbatha village elder Johnson Wachira, while confirming the recovery of the body, revealed that the deceased body was discovered more than 10 kilometers away from where he drowned after a serious two –day search by the residents and the local authorities.

The deceased student’s family arrived on Friday, May 17, led by his father, Samuel Murkomen, expressing their shock at the news of their son’s passing.

“We have come all the way from Kaimugor village in Trans Nzoia County after receiving information from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations that our son was no longer alive. We travelled to Kirinyaga and were able to identify the body,” said Samuel Murkomen.

Samuel further showed appreciation to the local residents for working tirelessly to recover the body of the deceased.

The body of the deceased has been moved to the morgue.
