Shinyalu MP embarks on one-graduate-one-household program to improve literacy level

Shinyalu Member of Parliament, (MP) Fred Ikana has launched an education program dubbed “One-Graduate-One-Household” meant to improve literacy levels in the Constituency.

Speaking at Shamiloli School in his Constituency when he presided over disbursement of education bursary cheques to hundreds of students in secondary schools and institutions of higher learning, Ikana said that he is going to use chiefs, their assistants and village elders to map the entire Constituency and ascertain the students that will be placed on full education scholarships to enable them excel in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education, KCSE examinations and subsequently join colleges.

He said hundreds of such students were already placed on such scholarships with a number in universities while others have already graduated and seeking job opportunities in and outside the country.

“The one-graduate-one-household initiative is meant to enable the needy students from across Shinyalu to have access to university education,” the MP said.

“These students will in turn empower their respective families and communities and effectively help break the cycles of poverty in coming years,” he added.

He also promised to deliver a 52-seater bus to St. Monica Lubao Secondary School next month the way he donated one to Lugala Secondary.

“I will do the same to other schools in the entire constituency based on their performance in academics and out-of-class activities. The buses will be of help not to just the respective schools but others in the neighborhood, and the public,” he added.

The MP also affirmed that all the storey learning blocks being put up in a number of primary schools across the constituency will be completed before the end of the year.
