Shift in attitude as senior school teachers embrace retooling

Today, Monday, August 11, 2025, marks Day One of the five-day retooling exercise for senior school teachers nationwide, kicking off with an unexpected wave of enthusiasm, a sharp contrast to the resistance and low engagement seen in previous cohorts.

Education news pitched camp in various counties across the country and established that the senior school teachers were giving the training the honor and decorum it has always lacked.

“We are finding the exercise as engaging as it should be unlike the previous times when we had to convince the teachers to stay on course”, said Joseph, a field officer from Nyanza region.

It was a bee hive of activity in Nairobi region where teachers were seen engaged in constructive focused discussions that were facilitated by the curriculum support officers, quality assurance officers and personnel from Kenya institute of curriculum development.

“At first we had numerous questions about CBC, but our trainers assured us these would be addressed as we interact with the content”, said Fatuma, an enthusiastic teacher from Kilifi county.

In Kiambu, kuppet officials who visited various training centres implored upon Tsc to ensure timely reimbursement of allowances in a bid to make the training meaningful. They castigated the commission for it’s usual delayed reimbursement that made the primary and junior school teachers paint retooling a gloomy picture.

Special schools teachers from the participating senior schools urged the commission to make their training residential. The teachers lamented that unlike their regular colleagues, their training is done at one point in the county. They complained of travelling long distance to reach the training venues which has unbearable cost implications during such time of the month.Their clarion call also corroborated Kuppet’s call for quick reimbursement as this will cushion them from third term’s costs of sending their children back to school.
