Shaping champions: CS Mvurya launches sports academy to turn local talent global

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya launched the construction of a sports academy at Matuga Girls National School in Kwale County on Thursday, April 17, 2025.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya has launched the construction of a Sh54 million state-of-the-art sports academy at Matuga Girls National School, marking a significant milestone in youth empowerment and sports development in the region.

The facility will feature modern changing rooms, football and volleyball pitches, running tracks, a social hall, two classrooms, and water facilities. Once complete, it is expected to serve as a hub for nurturing sporting talent and promoting physical fitness among young people in Kwale County.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, CS Mvurya said the project is part of the Kenya Kwanza government’s broader agenda to empower the youth through sports while creating employment opportunities.

“This is more than just a sports academy; it is a place where dreams will be shaped and discipline instilled,” he said.

He said the government is determined to invest in young people’s potential, believing they hold the key to transforming the country.

The CS added that investing in youth also invests in the nation’s stability, economy, and pride.

He noted that President William Ruto’s administration is implementing reforms to ensure grassroots talents are identified early and given the support they need to thrive.

Mvurya said similar projects will be rolled out nationwide, with each county receiving at least one sports academy.

He assured that the facilities will be open to anyone interested in participating in sports, keeping physically fit, or nurturing their talent, regardless of age or background.

Mvurya urged the youth to use the upcoming facility to nurture their talents and pursue careers in various sporting disciplines.

“Let this be the place where your journey begins, from local talent to national and even international stars,” he said.

Construction on the academy is expected to begin immediately and be completed within a few months. Once it is fully operational, the first intake of athletes will join.

Matuga Girls National School Principal Carolyne Zawadi Nguma has emphasised the importance of the sports academy in complementing the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC).

She described the initiative as critical in nurturing students’ talents beyond the classroom.

Nguma noted that the academy aligns with the CBC’s core objective of developing well-rounded learners who can excel in both academics and co-curricular activities.

“This sports academy is fundamental in realising the goals of the CBC. She said that it offers our students a platform to identify and grow their talents while instilling values such as discipline, teamwork, and resilience,” she said.

Nguma further highlighted that the program will not only benefit learners with athletic abilities but also open opportunities for future careers in sports management, physiotherapy, coaching, and sports.
