Kenyans have been urged to seriously engage in environmental conservation through tree planting to address global warming and ozone layer challenges.
Vivian Masitsa, the head of Shamberere National Polytechnic’s environment and sanitation department, echoed these sentiments during the countrywide tree-planting week exercise.
While working around the clock to hit their target of 750,000 trees planted by the institution, Masitsa confirmed that they have grown and distributed 8,500 tree seedlings across the school and to sister institutions.
“This event saw us bring trees that we planted as an institution and then gave to our sister technical and vocational training institutes, including Bushiangala Technical Training Institute and Navakholo Technical and Vocational College. We also engaged Shamberere Primary and Secondary and local communities in the exercise.
We aim to green our environment as much as possible to enable the availability of rainfall, soil conservation, and solar energy, which are crucial to our lives,” she observed.
She encouraged the learners and staff of the institutions to take up the national government tree planting initiative seriously, as trees were important for fruits, medicines, timber and firewood, and beautification of the environment.
Her counterpart, Wycliffe Matalanga, termed the exercise crucial to the country’s well-being, considering that more forest cover was the start of enough rainfall to enable farmers to produce sustainable foodstuffs.

“As we celebrate this tree-planting week, a government initiative under the Ministry of Education, State Department of Technical and Vocational Training (TVET), let us all support the programme as it is geared towards bettering our environment and lives. The world is at a crossroads, and climate change takes centre stage. Meetings are held after each to find a lasting solution to the raging problem,” he said.
At the same time, plans are underway to set up a new technical branch to serve learners from Butali Chegulo and its adjacent wards.
In a meeting with the residents of the Shipala Community area, Makwabuye village, MCA Kevin Mahelo, together with the national government administration and Shamberere National Polytechnic, conducted a public participation on the proposed Kabras East TTI at Makhwabuye NG—CDF land as per article 118 of the constitution.
The Chief Principal of Shamberere National Polytechnic, Dr Elisha Nyamu, expressed his appreciation to the area residents, who unanimously endorsed the project.
Shamberere National Polytechnic will begin by establishing a branch in the area that will later develop into an independent TTI.
