Seven inmates from the Kericho Annex Prison will be among more than 500 graduands set to receive certificates during the inaugural graduation ceremony at Kericho Township Technical and Vocational College (TVC) on November 13, 2025.
The inmates, who pursued courses in welding and fabrication, carpentry, and mechanics among others, were trained under a partnership between the college and the prison aimed at equipping them with skills to aid their reintegration into society after serving their sentences.
Kericho Township TVC Principal Shadrack Tonui said the initiative seeks to transform lives through technical training and rehabilitation.
“We approached the leadership of the local Annex Prison and agreed to train inmates in various skills. Our college will award them certificates that will make them productive members of society after release,” he said.
Tonui likened the inmates’ transformation to that of the Biblical St. Paul, saying imprisonment should be seen as a place of reform and self-discovery rather than punishment.

The graduation will be preceded by the inaugural Mr. and Miss TVET Kenya contest on November 12, an event that will bring together youth from both public and private TVET institutions to showcase creativity and talent.
The Cabinet Secretary for Education, Julius Ogamba, is expected to preside over the graduation and award the winners of the pageant.
Tonui also encouraged skilled individuals without formal qualifications to enroll in the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program, noting that over 100 trainees have already registered.
