Serani crowned Coast kings after penalty thriller, becomes first school to book National slot

Serani and Tononoka players battle fiercely in a tense final decided by dramatic penalty shootout.

Serani Secondary School becomes the first boys’ school to qualify for the KSSSA 2025 National Games, set to be hosted in Kakamega, after a dramatic penalty shootout victory over Tononoka Secondary School at the Coast Region Term Two finals held at Mpeketoni Boys High School.

In a pulsating final that lived up to its billing, Serani and Tononoka battled to a 1-1 draw in regulation time. But it was the Serani, who kept their nerve in the shootout, winning 5-3 on penalties, sending their fans into celebration and securing their ticket to Kakamega.

Tononoka, who put up a spirited performance throughout the tournament, will rue their missed chances but walk away with heads held high after pushing the champions to the limit.

The final attracted hundreds of spectators at Mpeketoni, with the atmosphere electric from kick-off. Tononoka had drawn first blood in the first half before Serani responded, levelling the score to take the match into penalties.

With this victory, Serani becomes the first school from Coast Region to officially qualify for the KSSSA 2025 Nationals, where they hope to replicate or improve on their past performances on the national stage.

The national games in Kakamega County, and all eyes will now be on Serani as they carry the hopes of the Coast Region into the next phase of the competition.
