Four Senators have asked the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) to cease the alleged harassment and demoralization of candidates during the ongoing Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.

Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni, leading the charge, expressed concern during a fundraising event for the NewDawn SDA church.

The legislators denounced the recent arrests of three students over the alleged possession of unauthorized examination materials, asserting that such students did not deserve the inconsiderate exposure they received.

Additionally, Omogeni proposed a more measured approach, suggesting that if irregular papers were found in possession of students, they should have been allowed to complete their ongoing examinations before being held for questioning.

Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the trauma inflicted on parents who had invested significantly in their children’s education.

“There’s need for professional procedures in handling such cases rather than subjecting students to unfair treatment,” Madzayo stated.

He further pledged to bring the matter to the Senate for further democratic and constitutional deliberations.

Migori Senator Eddy Oketch criticized the government, alleging interference with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to intimidate teachers in the region.

He urged the government, specifically calling on Machogu from the region, to provide clarity on the students’ hard work and award them rightful grades.

Senator Enock Wambui of Kitui County advocated for individual investigations, cautioning against implicating an entire region due to the Education CS’s origin.

He emphasized the separation of politics from educational matters to safeguard the students’ future.

The Senators collectively called for a fair and transparent process in handling examination irregularities while preserving the integrity of the education system.
