Senator urges parents, students to stop abusing tobacco

Senator

Nominated Senator Essy Okenyuri has blamed parents for the widespread use of tobacco among the youth.

Speaking during the World No Tobacco Day celebrations held in Uriri constituency, the senator lamented that most parents send their children to buy cigarettes for them yet end up expecting the children not to use the substance.

Okenyuri warned parents against preaching water and drinking wine and expecting people to believe their preaching.

She further asked students to stop using the drug as it causes diseases like tuberculosis, asthma and lung cancer.

The senator stated that the celebrations are observed to raise awareness about the harmful effects of tobacco among communities.

Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha said the theme of this year’s campaign is “We need food, not tobacco”

The CS revealed that Kenya has been recognized globally for the Tobacco Free Farms Initiative that is piloted in Migori and trickling to Bungoma, Busia and Meru counties.

“Kenya will receive 3 awards in recognition of her exemplary implementation of the World Health Organization’s Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, Protocol to eliminate illicit trade in tobacco products and the Tobacco Control Act,” she said.

The meeting was hosted by Migori County governor Ochillo Ayacko, area MP Mark Nyamira and Bungoma County Senator Wafula Wafoli.
