Meru Senator Kathuri Murungi has embarked on a journey of empowering youths in a bid to curb crime, alcohol and drug abuse in the region.
The initiative has been received with great enthusiasm in the area.
Speakers at Kariene Primary school grounds during the senator’s award-giving ceremony to thousands of youths participating in his countywide tournament praised Murungi, saying the sporting activities had reduced crimes, illicit brews uptake, and drug and substance abuse.
Murungi, also the Senate deputy speaker, said he had spent more than Sh 700 000 from his family coffers to award more than 58 football teams from the Central Imenti constituency.
“I started this empowerment for youths in 2010 to keep them busy and engaged to curb illicit brews and drug abuse. I don’t use a single coin from the government kitty but my family money and friends,” he said.
Meru County Assembly Speaker Ayub Bundi, who declared that he would unseat the area MP Kirima Ngushine, praised Murungi and described him as a charismatic leader.

Murungi expressed confidence that there will be no more noise and drama theatrics like those experienced during the impeached Governor Kawira Mwangaza’s tenure.
“I have faith Governor Mutuma will deliver. Let us all support and give him ample time. He will restore the lost glory and respect the Meru community deserves,” Murungi said.
He said he would continue overseeing and championing the fight to bring more resources into Meru’s county government.
Murungi has called on the Meru County Assembly members to approve Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia’s CECM nominees so that the governor can actualise his dream of developing the county.
He urged the executive and the assembly to exist cohesively to enhance developments in the County.
