Kirinyaga County Senator James Murango, has ignited a crucial conversation in the Senate, demanding immediate attention to the concerning state of Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) within his county.
His impassioned plea to the Senate Standing Committee on Education comes amidst a torrent of complaints highlighting a deeply worrying decline in the quality of early learning environments for Kirinyaga’s youngest learners.
“We cannot stand by while the very foundation of our children’s future crumbles,” Senator Murango stated.
“The current conditions are simply unacceptable, creating a dire learning and teaching environment for both our precious children and their dedicated educators.” He added
The Senator’s request for a comprehensive statement seeks to unearth the stark realities on the ground. He is specifically pushing for detailed information on the number of ECDE centres across Kirinyaga, a precise breakdown of permanent and semi-permanent classrooms, and a clear articulation of the existing classroom deficit.

Beyond infrastructure, Senator Murango’s concerns extend directly to the welfare of the ECDE teaching force. He is pressing for an update on the implementation of the ECDE teachers’ Scheme of Service by the County Government of Kirinyaga, questioning whether the committed educators are receiving their due.
Furthermore, the Senator has sought clarity on the current teacher-to-pupil ratio, and a definitive answer on whether Kirinyaga County is grappling with a shortage of ECDE teachers.
The Committee is now tasked with providing a thorough account of the measures the County Government of Kirinyaga has undertaken to ensure that all ECDE teachers are employed on permanent terms, receive their salaries promptly, and are afforded promotions through due process.
