Senator demands answers from education committee on errors in 2023 KCPE

Nominated Senator Crystal Asige. She has demanded to know the steps taken to get to the bottom of the discrepancies seen in the 2023 KCPE results.

Nominated Senator Crystal Asige has demanded answers from the education committee on the errors in the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) exam results and asked it to provide a comprehensive report on all documented instances of erroneous grading of candidates in exams.

The nominated Senator wants KNEC to clarify whether it has addressed each of the issues raised, questioning why incorrect marks were awarded, wrong subjects graded and inconsistencies published.

In her request, she asked the committee to explain the discrepancies between results sent through the KNEC portal and those through SMS by service providers.

“The Committee on Education should explain why there were discrepancies between the results received by candidates through the KNEC portal and the SMS service provider and state how the gaps that caused the discrepancies have been addressed,” Asige said.

The legislator also asked the committee to state the impact of the reported misalignment that caused some candidates to receive marks for subjects they did not sit and outline any steps taken by the Ministry of Education (MoE), KNEC and other stakeholders to audit the results with a view to resolve all reported and unreported discrepancies before the secondary school selection process commences.

She further requested the members of the committee to disclose the corresponding timelines that the MoE and KNEC has put in place to ensure candidates contest the 2023 KCPE results and outline any steps taken to assist vulnerable learners from marginalized communities who may lack access to information on the mechanisms or the resources to contest the results.

KCPE results were released on November 23, 2023 and the selection exercise commenced on November 27, 2023 to last two weeks, amid calls and petitions to cancel the exercise owing to the confusion that accompanied the release.
