A weighty stalemate preventing Kenyatta University medical students from receiving crucial training at the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) has drawn a stern directive from the Senate Health Committee.
Meeting on Thursday at Bunge Tower, the committee issued a firm September 2025 deadline for both institutions to resolve the protracted dispute, which has forced numerous students to seek alternative placements in hospitals across Kiambu and Thika.
Senator Jackson Mandago, Chairperson of the Senate Health Committee calls the leadership of Kenyatta University and KUTRRH solve their differences to allow students get the crucial training they need.

“Let’s be very clear: the welfare of these students is not negotiable,” Mandago asserted
“We are seeing signs of distraction and internal competition that must stop now. This is not about who runs what; it’s about providing the best possible training for our country’s future doctors.” He added
Conceding the unfortunate reality of the situation, Senator Kembi Gitura, the Chairperson of the KUTRRH Board, acknowledged the hospital’s independent operational status under existing laws.
However, Gitura was quick to clarify, stating, “I was appointed chair of a board guided by legal instruments. But I fully agree this is not about personalities. It is about ensuring our students receive the training they deserve.”
