Several schools in the country have been closed after students went on a rampage amid the teachers’ strike which now enters its second week.

Machakos Boys High School has been closed after students went on a rampage on Sunday night.

School Principal Benson Manoo resorted to closing the school this morning after the students allegedly caused chaos forcing tutors who reside in the school to flee to safety.

Several other schools in the region have also been closed due to students’ unrest among them Nyayo Girls Secondary in Kalama sub-county where two dormitories were burnt down last night.

A dormitory was also razed down at Makindu Girls High on the same night while in Bungoma High School, a library was set on fire.

Other schools that have been closed include Mitaboni ABC Girls in Kathiani sub-county, Masii Girls, Matungulu ABC and Mtituni SA secondary schools.

Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has maintained that the strike is still on after the union officials held a National Governing Council meeting on Sunday where they resolved to continue the strike.

The union Secretary General Akelo Misori directed teachers to remain at home, adding that schools will not run until the government listens to their demands which include the promotion of stagnated teachers.

KUPPET’s resolution comes only days after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) rejected its request for talks to end the industrial action which has affected millions of students including Standard 8 and Form 4 students who are set to write their national exams at the end of this year.
