During a Pi Day celebration at Daystar University over the weekend, the Second Lady of Kenya, Dr Joyce Kithure, called on students to pursue Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses.

She stressed that these fields are vital for tackling societal challenges and fostering economic growth in Kenya.

Speaking under the banner “Numbers and Beyond: A STEM Challenge for Future Innovators,” Dr Kithure emphasized cultivating curiosity and innovative thinking among the nation’s youth.

“Today, we are not only here to celebrate science but also to spark a passion in our future innovators to explore careers in STEM,” she said.

Drawing on her background in Chemistry and her teaching experience at the University of Nairobi, she pointed out that STEM disciplines are essential for devising practical solutions to everyday problems.

Dr Kithure cited examples of Kenya’s progress, such as developing MPESA’s digital payment systems and installing wind turbines that bring power to rural areas.

In addition, she introduced her new initiative, The SaVE Communities Project—Science Adding Value to the Environment and the Community.

This project is designed to harness STEM expertise to confront issues like access to clean water, environmental pollution, clean energy, and climate change adaptation. “Access to clean and sufficient water is a basic human right, yet it remains a major challenge for many communities in Kenya,” she noted, adding that innovative STEM solutions are crucial for sustainable progress.

Dr Kithure also highlighted plans to promote modern farming techniques in diverse settings such as schools, churches, and urban centres to boost food security.

The project will further encourage value addition in agriculture through improved processing, packaging, and preservation, aiming to empower communities economically.

“I invite everyone to join me in realizing this project’s goals. Together, we can address these critical challenges and uplift our communities in transformative ways,” she said.
