Second chance for over 50 teen mothers as they resume studies in Kericho

Kericho County Women Rep. Beatrice Kemei presenting a cheque worth KSh5.7 million for women empowerment.

The office of the Kericho County Member of Parliament has assisted over 50 teen mothers to go back and resume studies.

County Women Representative Mrs. Beatrice Kemei said the initiative to assist the teen mothers who drop out of Primary or Secondary schools was in top gear and called on other levels of leadership in the county to set aside funds for the same.

“My office has been very keen on the issue of teen pregnancies and so far we have assisted over 50 girls or teen mothers who had dropped out of school due to early pregnancies. I call upon all the leaders drawn from the county to give financial and emotional help to the girls,” she added.

In a speech she delivered at the Moi Gardens during this year’s International Women Day she vowed to make, “early pregnancies a thing of the past through various interventions, from policy formulation and other direct means to solving the lack of financial problem and guidance and counseling.”

She said this year’s theme of was “Invest in Women: Accelerate Progress”, was apt with their efforts in rehabilitating the teen mothers who after successfully completing their education were of more value to their families and the community.

Kemei cautioned members of the community to be wary of settling rape and defilement cases out of court saying it was not acceptable in Common Law adding, “What encourages the sharp rise in teen pregnancies is the idea of settling such cases out of court. This does not help the situation at all, it only exacerbates it.”

On Conservation, the Women Rep called on Government agencies, counties and non-governmental organizations to invest in women, who she observed were better placed in advancing efforts of environmental conservation.

The women rep who was accompanied by the Bishop of Kericho Catholic Diocese RT Rev. Alfred Rotich and Sister Bernadette who lead sisters from the church involved in conservation asked people to be serious on conservation of Mother Earth since the vagaries of Climate Change was so severe and catastrophic on agriculture.

A former Bomet County Women Rep. Dr Cecilia Ngetich asked men to accord help to women in their pursuit of leadership in all cadres in the society. She took the opportunity to ask all women to pursue all openings in the political and private sector.

Bishop Rotich said the church will help organisations involved in rehabilitating the girl child asking residents to take environmental conservation seriously since the world was facing a serious environmental catastrophe.
