The government has lauded the Kenya Scouts Association for the role they play in promoting education calling upon the movement to reinforce teaching and learning in schools and supporting the Greening Kenya project.
Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Ezekiel Machogu, while addressing the leadership of the Association led by former Education CS Prof. Jacob Kaimenyi on May 24, 2023 in his office, emphasized the need to have Scouts championing the greening project in collaboration with the Ministry.
“The Scouts structure allows for the devolution of the Greening Kenya project and in collaboration with the Ministry and other stakeholders, the Scouts can champion this noble endeavor”, said Machogu.
The Principal Secretary, State Department of Basic Education Dr. Belio Kipsang on his part applauded the Association for the role it plays in complementing the school curriculum through the Scout Method of education.
“I appreciate the similarity between the Scout Method and the Competency Based Curriculum (CBC). If done very well the scout method can reinforce teaching and learning in schools,” stated Dr. Kipsang.
Scouting education enables young people to be self-fulfilled, inspired, action-oriented, and committed to a life of purpose and is rooted in the transformative ideals of equality, inclusivity, mutual respect, sustainability, harmony and optimism for the future.
It also promotes the growth and development of young people both as individuals and citizens through its programmes and initiatives; it is an educational movement committed to ensuring that each new generation of young people has the opportunity to realise their full potential as leaders in their community and the world.
Its non-formal educational approach aims to equip young people with the skills and competencies that enable these ideals, and through the Youth Programme, Scouting supports young people to become active citizens who are committed to being of service by being solutions-oriented and focused on creating positive change.
Dr. Kipsang also congratulated the Association for hosting a successful first Africa Rover Moot event in April 2023 that saw 1,000 young people from all over the world converge at Rowallan National Scouts Camp for ten days to learn from each other, innovate solutions to current world concerns, explore Kenya and have fun.
The first ever Africa Rover Moot event was organized by the Africa Scout Region – a divisional office of the World Scout Bureau of the World Organization of the Scout Movement – and hosted by the Kenya Scouts Association and will subsequently be organized and hosted in different countries after every 4 years.
A Rover Moot is a gathering of members of National Scout Organizations or Associations belonging to the branch or section of Rovers, which marks the climax of the Scouting programme for young people and the very contribution that Scouting ultimately makes to the Society by producing skilled, passionate and all-rounded youth ready to make a difference in the world.
