Learning institutions have been asked to embrace clean energy in a bid to reduce deforestation and conserve the environment.

Presiding over a clean energy initiative at Moi Tambach Primary School, Elgeyo Marakwet Deputy Governor Prof Grace Cheserek said the time had come for institutions to change the source of fuel to save the already depleted forest cover in the country.

Prof Cheserek said thousands of acres of trees are felled yearly for wood fuel used in boarding schools, adding that the trend jeopardizes ecosystems in the area that has seen increased destruction of forests.

She applauded the school for embracing the initiative, saying it could greatly conserve the environment. She called on other institution to follow suit.

“Thousands of trees are felled every year for firewood. This has contributed much to the degradation of the environment. We want to urge other schools to reverse the trend and emulate this institution,” she said.

The school partnered with Equity Bank to implement a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) project for the school’s dining hall.

The bank’s General Manager Stanley Ng’ang’a said the project will see the institution reduce the cost of energy production as well as increase efficiency.

He said the bank has supplied more LPG tanks to secondary schools in the county, saying the initiative has gained traction that will see saving of the environment and guarantee the safety and health of workers, who are constantly exposed to smoke emitted by firewood.
