Schools to receive capitation this month, Machogu says

Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu has announced that schools will receive capitation for the second term in the course of this month.

The CS revealed this on Thursday, June 6, 2024 during the launch of the 4th National Education Sector Strategic Plan (NESSP) 2023-2027 at Kenya School of Government, Lower Kabete in Nairobi County.

“We are at an advanced stage of ensuring that second term capitation will be released in the course of this month. No school will close because 50 per cent capitation was given to both primary and secondary schools,” he said.

The CS said schools received capitation in two batches in the first term, making up 50 per cent of the total capitation expected.

He said schools should expect a 30 per cent capitation for the second term.

“The final term which will be the third term we will be able to give the remaining 20 per cent,” he said.

The announcement is a huge boost for the education stakeholders; school heads, parents as well as students who had started to worry that the school will be forced to close down due to lack of capitation as some the schools owe suppliers money for their services.

Further, Machogu denied that universities across the country are facing a cash crunch of up to KSh29 billion adding that the universities will receive more capitation before the financial year ends.

“We are not having any such problem in universities. If there is one sub-sector that the government has done very well in giving out capitation it is in our universities and also moving forward, before the end of the financial year, we will release some more, we have not had any problem as far as our release of capitation for universities is concerned,” the CS said.

Additionally, Machogu said the government has allocated some funds for construction of Junior Secondary School classes.

“We have released some money, KSh3.5 billion and early next financial year we will release more, so we can say we have comfortably started the first batch of classes should be complete in four months and we will start another batch in about two months,” Machogu remarked.

The CS said that by the end of the year the ministry will have constructed between 16,000 to 18,000 classrooms as they seek to prepare for the Grade 9 students which will be domiciled in primary schools from next year January.
