Schools in Ruiru to plant 100,000 trees by end of the year
Schools in Ruiru are planning to plant 60,000 trees during the rainy season. That is according to a programmed that was launched by Ruiru MP Simon Ng’ang’a.
The program dubbed as ‘Adopt a Tree’ aims at conserving the environment and ensuring that school kids actively participate in the fight against climate change in the country.
Speaking at Matopeni Primary School when he led pupils in a tree planting exercise on Wednesday, King’ara said that seedlings will be distributed in all schools, adding that the program will be more emphasized in the semi-arid areas of the constituency including Gikumari, Kiratina, Mwalimu Farm and Gatong’ora villages.
“We must instill the culture of conserving our environment to our children so that they can adopt that responsibility. We will engage our schools in this exercise especially during this rainy season to ensure that we plant more trees,” King’ara said.

The MP noted that among the trees to be planted include fruit and indigenous trees noting that they already have different species of trees.
“Our aim is to conserve the environment so that we can participate in addressing the erratic weather that the country has been experiencing. These trees support human life in different ways including contributing to food security, they are used for medicinal purposes and are a source of energy for millions of Kenyans,” he said.
Schools will join government efforts in planting 15 billion trees
King’ara said that the program is in line with the Government’s initiative of planting 15 billion trees by 2032 which will raise the country’s forest cover to 30 percent.
“Climate change is real and it’s here with us. We must devise all means to address it. We believe in some years to come we will have significantly contributed towards improving our country’s forest cover,” he said.
He added that his office will be partnering with other stakeholders in Ruiru in the noble initiative, saying that they target to plant more than 100,000 trees this year.
