The government through the Ministry of Education has directed School Principals in collaboration with County Commissioners to make travel arrangements for Form Four students in and out of the zoned area.
In a memo dated April 9, 2021 signed by the Principal Secretary, State Department of Early Leanings and Basic Education Dr. Julius Jwan, the ministry has asked all the County Directors of Education to work with County Commissioners and School Principals to ensure that students are facilitated to travel in and out of Nairobi, Machakos, Nakuru, Kiambu and Kajiado after their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
“However, as the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education comes to an end, the candidates will need to travel to and out of the area under lockdown. You are required to work with County Commissioners and Principals of Secondary Schools to ensure that the candidates are facilitated to travel,” reads the memo in part.
Under the new directives which apply to both public and private schools, the schools will be required to make sufficient plans with transport companies to have students picked from school, and ensure that all students who will be traveling are in their full school uniform and bear a letter of introduction from their respective schools.
In addition, the schools have further been directed to communicate to the parents of the students on the transport arrangements, with Regional Directors of Educations being tasked with implementation follow-ups of the directives.
The cessation of movement into and out of the five counties took effect on Saturday, March 27, 2021 until further notice, in order to mitigate the spread of Covid-19 pandemic, after President Uhuru Kenyatta declaring that the five counties are disease infected areas since they account for 70 per cent of the county’s infections.
