With the declining cases of the Covid-19 in the country, Cabinet Secretary for Education Prof. George Magoha has now hinted on the pushing closer of the school reopening dates.
While checking on the preparedness of Rongo University, Magoha disclosed that a joint committee of stakeholders is monitoring the preparedness of schools and reopening will be pegged on the outcome of the report.
“We are conducting a daily monitoring of the situation in learning institutions and once we are convinced that the Covid-19 curve has flattened then we shall take another look at the academic year,” said Prof Magoha.
The CS, however, maintained that the government’s earlier position of re-opening schools in January 2021 is still in place.
“I want to be categorical that we are inching closer to flattening the curve based on the daily updates on the Covid-19 hence our position of reopening schools in January might be adjusted,” he said.
Speaking on Monday, the CS faulted the push by World Health Organization (WHO) to have African countries reopen schools terming the move inadmissible at the time when there are uncertainties in the state of the pandemic.
“Those clamoring for the reopening such as WHO and UNICEF should know that we took that step for the safety and love we have for our children,” said Magoha.
However, Rongo University vice chancellor Professor Samuel Gudu noted that the institution is fully braced for reopening after meeting the required threshold.
“As a university, having met all the required obligations, we are set and ready for the whistle to be blown,” said Prof Gudu.
