All schools in Emurua Dikirr constituency have been closed today to allow students, teachers and residents to attend the funeral service of the late Member of Parliament (MP) Johanna Ng’eno.
The burial ceremony which is being held at Emurua Dikirr Comprehensive School, has already received thousands of mourners who have gathered to pay their last respects to the late legislator who died in a tragic helicopter crash alongside four other people.
Education officials in the constituency said the decision to temporarily close schools was reached after consultations with local administrators and education stakeholders.
They said the the move was meant to allow the entire school community to participate in the mourning activities and honour the late MP, who had been a strong supporter of education development in the area.
Teachers who spoke to Education News noted that many schools had expressed the desire to attend the funeral service, making it difficult for normal learning activities to continue.
As a result, learners were released to join their families and community members in paying tribute to the fallen leader.
Hundreds of residents began streaming to the funeral venue early in the morning, turning the grounds of Emurua Dikirr Comprehensive School into a sea of mourners.
