Schools in Busia receive tree seedlings in initiative to conserve environment

Learning institutions in Teso North, Teso South, Matayos, Nambale, Bunyala and Samia sub-counties in Busia county have received tree seedlings donated by various organizations in efforts towards conserving the environment.

Speaking in Malaba municipality after presiding over the planting of tree seedlings on June 23, Linda Mazingira Initiative Managing Director Patrick Ikwara said the organization had planted over 50,000 seedlings in collaboration with SSS10-USA Environment Wing, adding that they are targeting to plant one million tree seedlings by 2027.

“We have planted 3,000 tree seedlings today with 95 per cent being indigenous and the rest assorted. Learning institutions in Malaba municipality that also took part in the programme include Malaba Township, Kajei, Model Junior Academy, Railways, Ekisegere, Isegere Toto and Amoni,” he said.

Ikwara further revealed that they also distributed 3,000 tree seedlings to Bulanda, Siteko, Mabale, Bwamani, Mundulusia in Busia municipality and Namuduru in Samia sub-county.

Kisoko Girls Secondary, Murende Primary and Sigalagala Polytechnic in Kakamega, and Moding Primary, Kokutu Primary and Bukedea TTI in Uganda also received tree seedlings.

“The tree planting exercise was in line with President Ruto’s clarion call to plant 15 billion trees by 2030. Busia county has a tree cover of less than one per cent which is a dangerous trend in environmental conservation,” he said.

The tree planting programme was facilitated by the county government of Busia, Linda Mazingira Initiative and other partners including the Kenya Revenue Authority – Busia and Kisumu, and the Kenya Forest Service.
