The Ministry of Education has directed all public and private primary schools across the country to take part in a massive tree planting exercise during this year’s Mazingira Day celebrations, scheduled for Friday, October 10, 2025.
In a circular signed by the Basic Education Principal Secretary , Prof. Julius K. Bitok, schools have been instructed to focus on the planting of fruit trees under the theme “Citizen-Centric Tree Growing and Environmental Stewardship.” Each school is required to plant a minimum of 2,000 fruit trees as part of the national environmental initiative.
Prof. Bitok said the move is aimed at promoting environmental conservation while improving school-based nutrition through the establishment of fruit tree orchards within learning institutions.
“The objective is to promote environmental conservation while enhancing school-based nutrition through the establishment and growth of fruit tree orchards in learning institutions,” the circular reads.
Both public and private primary schools have been designated as the main venues for the exercise. The ministry also urged the participation of school alumni, learners, and local communities, saying the initiative would help strengthen school networks and community engagement in environmental activities.

Education officials across the country have been directed to communicate the order to all head teachers, ensure effective coordination of the exercise, and encourage active participation from all stakeholders. Learners are also required to report to school on Friday, October 10, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., despite the day being a public holiday, to take part in the planting exercise.
Prof. Bitok called on school administrators and local education officers to work together to make the event a success. “Your cooperation in ensuring the successful celebration of Mazingira Day 2025 is highly appreciated,” he stated.
Mazingira Day, celebrated annually, is dedicated to promoting environmental awareness and sustainability across Kenya. This year’s focus on fruit trees reflects the government’s broader agenda to address climate change, boost nutrition, and promote sustainable food production within schools.
