Schools bearing the brunt of dry spell

By Erick Nyayiera

Schools in Siaya County are currently the worst hit following the current water crisis that has been occasioned by the ongoing drought in the country.

In Bondo Sub-county, the administration of a school like Bar-Kowino Mixed secondary school which has a population of 1,167 students has been spending at least Kshs. 14,000 on water per day.

The school Principal Mr. Francis Ouko through a communication to the government, the local leadership and well-wishers appealed for support to enable them cope up with the situation which he said that is now becoming unsustainable.

As a result of the current situation, education stakeholders in Bondo sub-county led by Mr. Thomas Andiwo Obondoh are now calling on the government through the Ministry of education to consider digging boreholes in schools to contain the perennial water problems in such institutions.

He says that both national and county governments through their respective departments of education can combine efforts in ensuring that each of the 150 schools in Bondo sub-county has a borehole that can serve both the school and the local community.

The education expert says that in order to contain the perennial water shortages in Bondo, Siaya Governor James Orengo and Bondo MP Gideon Ochanda must now formulate a way through which they can partner to sink boreholes in the schools.

Mr. Obondo who spoke in Bondo town said that they need to take the issue of water as a matter of priority, adding that this should be the last drought experienced in the region.

He stated that it was quite unfortunate that Bondo residents still have no access to safe and clean water 60 years after independence, reiterating that the problem can only be sorted out through such arrangement.
