The incident which has left teachers with minor injuries and pupils stranded, with normal learning now taking place under trees happened on September 3.

According to the head teacher, Joshua Ganda, the six teachers narrowly escaped death and school property worth over one million has been destroyed.

He said the teachers suddenly heard the sound of something breaking before they saw the building’s wall collapse. He added that some of them panicked, but he thanked God that nobody was injured in the incident.

The fallen structure destroyed key installations, including the school’s main electricity meter box though the actual value of the damage has not yet been determined.

He explained that they are waiting for officials from the Department of Public Works to come and assess the damage.

“With no offices left, the staff has been forced to use a Grade Six classroom to store essential materials, pushing the pupils to study under trees.” He said.

Ganda noted that they had a lot of equipment which could not be left in the open and that they were now using the Grade Six classroom to keep it, adding that disruption had interfered with the school’s academic calendar.

He is now appealing for urgent intervention from the national government, the NG-CDF, and the Homa Bay County Government to help in the construction an administration block and classrooms for the school.

The collapse is suspected to have been caused by heavy rainfall earlier in the week followed by strong winds on Tuesday evening.
