Over 170 secondary school principals in Kirinyaga have convened a meeting at Kerugoya Boys High School to address the recent incidents of strikes impacting schools in the county.

The meeting graced by Central Regional Director of Education (RDE) Sabina Aroni also brought together the Kirinyaga County security team under the leadership of the county commissioner, and the county education officials.

This gathering followed the indefinite closure of Kerugoya Boys and Karia Boys, which occurred due to dormitory fires, disrupting regular learning activities.

Aroni pointed out that most school unrests happen during the second term of the academic year. She mentioned that while some strikes are spontaneous, others exhibit warning signs, emphasizing the importance for principals being vigilant to detect them.

She urged head teachers to remain present in school at all times, respond to student needs diplomatically, and involve teachers in supporting students.

The RDE mentioned that while nobody is directly accusing anyone of causing the unrest, investigations have often revealed the involvement of teachers.

She requested principals to permit students to enjoy entertainment and to communicate with them using suitable language. Aroni highlighted that at times, the subordinate staff is important in managing unrests.

At the same time, Kirinyaga County Commissioner Hussein Allasow emphasized that the principals bears the ultimate responsibility as the chief officers overseeing the schools, amidst various theories surrounding the causes of institutional unrest.

Allasow further pointed out that instances of indiscipline among the students are a significant issue, emphasizing the importance for principals to comprehend their students’ behaviour.

He voiced concerns about recent incidents where, whenever a fire is reported, the principal is absent from the school, highlighting that the security team depends on the principal to detect and prevent strikes in schools.
