A school in Kakamega has launched a competitive scholarship programme that has won praise from parents and other education stakeholders.
St Mary’s Girls High School Mumias Senior Principal Monica Buchichi noted that when she advertised scholarship slots, she received more than 58 applicants, which they had to trim down to 38 to add to the five already under the school’s sponsorship, and four who walked into school with literally nothing at the beginning of the year.
The head urged parents to always put aside some money for the fund and own the school so that they can together achieve the school vision of producing all-round girls, revealing that many children in the region have their eyes set on the school as their choicest destination.
She lauded the parents the supporting the programme and contributing generously into the kitty set aside for the less privileged.
Promising that the school will always remain steadfast in churning out competitive girls in any work environment, she said developing virtue and grooming girls into responsible citizens is their primary calling.
She, however, noted that the school has its fair share of challenges, citing a lack of a multipurpose hall and hostels as the major drawbacks as the school population has risen to over 2000. They are currently putting up a 4-storey hostel that upon completion will house more than eight hundred girls.
