A secondary school girl is nursing wounds at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital after she was allegedly beaten senseless by two members of the area community policing group (Nyumba Kumi) in Nyachenge village.
Martha Nyamongo, 17, said that the two men found her passing time with a school mate on Monday at around 2:OO PM when they suspected them of engaging in sexual activity.
“They arrested us and took us to the Chief’s office without explanation on why they were flogging us,” she said.
The Form Three student at Nyachenge Secondary school said that she found it impossible to sit down after they were released and headed straight back home where she laid down to sleep.
Her mother, Alice Nyamongo, said that she found her daughter unconscious in bed and informed neighbours who assisted to take her to hospital.
She accused area Chief Catherine Magoma of vesting too much power on the community policing groups who frequently harrass innocent people in the area.
Mrs. Nyamongo further appealed to the police to arrest the two culprits – Mr. Siro and Mr. Mosiori whom she said had gone missing after they got wind that that they were being sought by the police.
Efforts by Education News to get the Chief’s comment on the matter bore no fruit.
When visited, Nyachenge Secondary Principal Mr. Samwel Onchangu revealed that although the girl had been absent from school for two weeks, she was very disciplined since joining the school two years ago and wondered how she was found on the wrong side.
He appealed to the police to conduct thorough investigation for the suspects to be arrested and arraigned in a court of law.
