The indomitable national and East African hockey champions Nyamira Girls were this afternoon edged out at the ongoing Nyanza Regionals Term 1 Games by Ng’iya Girls in a closely contested match with a 1-0 victory.

Mercy Rebecca, 16, scored the match-deciding goal at St. Joseph Rapogi High School in Migori County. The team is now gearing up for the nationals, which will be held in Mombasa next month.

Ng’iya Girls coaches George Nyadida, Edwin Ogony, and Macrine Achieng are confident that the new Nyanza champions will secure a ticket for the East African competitions in August 2025.

According to the institution’s arrowhead, Mrs Hellen Masengeli, the victory wasn’t overnight. The school massively invested time and resources.

She is candid that the girls will make it to East Africa, as her previous school, Sinyolo Girls, emerged winners in the Federation of East Africa Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSA) competitions of 2014 held in Dar-es-Salam in Tanzania and those of 2015 in Huye-Rwanda.

In 2016, they were the East African champions for the competitions held in Eldoret-Kenya. In 2017, Sinyolo Girls retained the trophy in Gulu-Uganda.
