School closed indefinitely following students’ unrest

PCEA Kambala Girls Secondary School in Molo, Nakuru County has been closed indefinitely after the students went on strike.

Ms Naomi Wacuka, one of the parents at the institution, said her daughter arrived home the following morning in shock following what happened in school.

‘Upon arrival at the institution, I found lots of parents stranded at the main entrance waiting for their daughters’ said Ms Wacuka.

The parents spent more than six hours by the main gate as security guards denied them access into the institution.

“I have spent more than four hours here but I have not been allowed to get inside the school to know the whereabouts of my child. The security guard has been authorized by the school’s principal not to allow us inside,” said one of the angry parents who sought anonymity.

During an interview with Education News, the parents said the principal did not address them but only urged them to keep quiet since they were ‘making noise’.

The school incurred losses of an unknown value during the strike. Window panes were smashed and part of the wooden fence pulled down during the incident that happened at around 11pm.

“I had to take my child to the hospital since she sustained leg injuries during the incident,” said another parent, adding that parents are set to bear the consequences of extra funds due to the damages caused by the students.

One of the students said they slept in the cold after escaping through the fence and spent the night inside a farm at Molo Sub County cemetery.

As the parents remained standing at the school’s main entrance, the principal convened a meeting with the multi-agency team that comprised of the security personnel, the Board of Management (BOM) and educational officials.

The education officials declined to speak to the press after the meeting with the management of the school.

The incident comes barely a few weeks after Molo Academy Boys Secondary School was also closed indefinitely following the student’s arrest. The students resumed learning a few weeks later.
