School children bear brunt of severe famine

Several learners in the Ganze Sub-county in Kilifi County could drop out of school because of the hunger ravaging the region, officials say.
Ganze Children’s Officer Daniel Mbogoh said currently 300,000 people are affected by the drought with the numbers expected to rise impacting negatively on education.
He said the drought currently ravaging the county has led most parents to abdicate their responsibilities towards their children.
According to Mbogoh children in various parts of Ganze face the myriads of challenges which make their transition to responsible adulthood an arduous task.
“Data shows among the cases brought forward, children neglect tops the list and this remains a major cause of concerns,” he said.
In his report, he said the long drought and persistent famine have contributed a lot to destruction of families.
Mbogoh added that due to the high school dropout rate the community has remained illiterate with most youth becoming adults before they attain basic education.
Chief Officer for Disaster Management Adan Mohamed has also said Kilifi County Government has allocated Sh25 million for relief food and non food items.
