At only 36 years old, Symon Barkachai Keitany will break the glass ceiling to become the youngest Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Baringo Central sub-county as he graduates today at Karatina University.
Keitany is among seven PhD students from various fields who will be conferred the honors from at the institution today.
The dedicated scholar will receive a Doctorate after successfully defending his thesis titled, ‘The Bandit Economy Based on Cattle Rustling: Contribution and Impact of Banditry and Insecurity in Baringo from 1900-2020’.
Speaking to Education News, Keitany noted that the cattle-rustling menace transformed from a culture to a business leading to untold suffering.
He called on the local leadership to steer residents away from the now vice in order to open up the region to diverse and more profitable economic ventures.
The historian, who has lectured at Egerton and Karatina Universities for a decade, acknowledged his parents, family members, friends and community for walking with him throughout his academic journey.
“I am overwhelmed by the kind comments from you. Thank you for the calls, texts, and conversations,” he wrote on his social media page.
The newest scholar, from little-known Chebutii village in Lelmen location, Baringo Central sub-county, adds another accolade to the region that has produced top-notch professionals and with the highest number of locals to dare abroad through studies.
His academic journey began at Chesongo, Salawa boarding and Kaptimbor primary school before joining Moi High School Kabarak and Egerton University for a Master of Arts Degree in History where he presented his thesis titled ‘History of Perkerra Irrigation Scheme in Baringo County 1956-2012’.
