Sacked JSS teachers have right of appeal, says TSC legal head

TSC Legal, Labour and Industrial Relations Director Calvin Anyuor leads a discussion in a past engagement. He has welcomed JSS teachers who were fired to appeal the decision as they have a right to do so.

Junior Secondary School (JSS) intern teachers who were terminated have a right to appeal, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Director Legal, Labour and Industrial Relations Calvin Anyuor has revealed.

Speaking to Education News, the legal officer said the commission is willing to let the 742 JSS intern teachers who were recently sacked to appeal for review of their cases as they have a right to do so.

The announcement is a huge relief to the teachers who lost their contracts after the events that unfolded on June 10 across the country.

They were fired on grounds that they deserted duty to take part in an illegal strike that lasted nearly a month, demanding that they be confirmed into Permanent and Pensionable (PnP) terms.

“The Commission has decided to terminate your internship engagement with effect from June 6, 2024, because you engaged in acts of professional misconduct in that you deserted duty with effect from May 13, 2024, to date while engaged as an Intern teacher,” the termination letters read in part.

According to the commission, a total of 10,348 teachers were absent from work from May 13, but only 9,606 responded to the show-cause letters within the two-week period.

Kericho County had 154 of those who were terminated, the highest number across all counties.
