Ruto pledges to employ 30,000 teachers by January

President Ruto has promised to employ over 30,000 teachers by January next year with the aim of reducing the nationwide teacher-student ratio gap.

While speaking at Embakasi, Nairobi on Wednesday, he revealed that he planned to partner with the National Government Constituencies Development Fund (NG-CDF) to upgrade school infrastructure as well as expand the school feeding programme in a bid to boost enrolment and performance.

“This will be the first phase of absorbing over 116,000 teachers since the government assumed office,” he said.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer Dr Nancy Macharia during the ‘World Teachers Day’ celebrations announced the hiring and posting of 14,460 new teachers across the country during.

Dr. Macharia said that the Commission was short of 114,581 teachers in both primary and secondary schools.

“The government has allocated Ksh 3.7 billion which is intended to address the shortage of teachers and also to ensure 100% transition policy where all students who complete their primary education are fully enrolled in secondary schools,” she stated.

The CEO added that the Treasury had allocated Ksh 2.5 billion to TSC for the recruitment of 5,000 permanent teachers and Ksh 1.2 billion for the hiring of 6,000 of their intern counterparts.
