President William Ruto has pledged his support to Alupe University in Teso South Sub County, Busia County to help it get to its feet and reach the level of other universities in the country.

Speaking at the weekend when he toured the university to open its new library, President Ruto pledged two billion shillings to the university for the construction of hostels for the students.

“This is one of the young universities that we have in our country and we must support it. I have been told there are some challenges including a lack of hostels and I direct that two billion shillings be sent to this institution for the construction of hostels for the students.” Ruto said

The president who was accompanied by his Deputy Rigathi Gachagua, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Education Minister Ezekiel Machogu and a host of local leaders led by Busia County governor Dr. Paul Otuoma and Teso South MP Hon. Mary Emase, also directed that three hundred million be sent to the university for the tarmacking of the roads in and around it and lighting of the institution.

“I have been shocked to learn that this is the only university in Kenya that has Murram Roads. I have also been told that there are not enough lights here and students are frequently attacked at night. Three hundred million shillings will be sent here to do that work.”

Education cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu hailed the University for the prudent use of money sent to it, noting that it was the only university in the country that had no pending billings.

“Am pleased to announce that all the money that has been sent to this university has been used well, and this is the only university in the country which has no pending billings.” Said Machogu

Governor Otuoma and Mp Emase hailed the president for the financial support he has given the university which was given a charter last year.

“We appreciate for the support because this institution can be a satellite university in this county. We have plans to have some medical students studying here and others at the Busia referral hospital KMTC.” He said Otuoma

On his side, the new Alupe University Vice Chancellor Prof. Peter Barasa assured the president and other leaders of his commitment to providing the best leadership and propelling the institution to greater heights.
